Humanin

Overview

Humanin (HN) was the first identified mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP), encoded by a small open reading frame within the mitochondrial DNA 16S rRNA gene (MT-RNR2) rather than the nuclear genome. It was first reported by Hashimoto et al. in 2001 (PNAS 98:6336), identified while screening an Alzheimer's disease patient occipital-lobe cDNA expression library for factors that could antagonize neuronal apoptosis induced by mutant APP (V642I). Vialdyne releases Humanin as a lyophilized peptide against a ≥99.0% HPLC main-peak specification, supplied with a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis covering RP-HPLC purity, mass-spec identity and appearance; water content is available on request and listed on the COA when tested. Mitochondrial-targeted peptides ship primarily to research labs studying OXPHOS, ROS biology, and mitochondrial dysfunction in disease models. The lipophilic / cationic character that drives mitochondrial accumulation also makes these peptides somewhat oxidation-prone in solution, working stocks should be prepared fresh or held at -80 °C rather than -20 °C when the workflow permits.
