Humanin

Overview

Humanin (HN) was the first identified mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP), encoded by a small open reading frame within the mitochondrial DNA 16S rRNA gene (MT-RNR2) rather than the nuclear genome. It was first reported by Hashimoto et al. in 2001 (PNAS 98:6336), identified while screening an Alzheimer's disease patient occipital-lobe cDNA expression library for factors that could antagonize neuronal apoptosis induced by mutant APP (V642I).
