Human cathelicidin antimicrobial peptide
Overview
LL-37 is the sole human cathelicidin-derived antimicrobial peptide, a 37-residue amphipathic helix released from the hCAP18 precursor. Beyond broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity it is studied as an immunomodulatory and wound-healing peptide, with research lines spanning innate immunity, chemotaxis, angiogenesis, and host-defence biology. Vialdyne releases lyophilised LL-37 at ≥99.0% HPLC main-peak. Because LL-37 is a long, cationic, aggregation-prone sequence, the released-batch COA pairs RP-HPLC purity with ESI-MS identity, peptide-content assay, water (Karl Fischer), counter-ion, residual solvents, and endotoxin, and full LC-MS/MS sequence confirmation is the recommended add-on when qualifying the peptide as a new reference standard.
Applications & buyer fit
Buyers in this category are research labs studying immune-modulation, cytokine signaling, and antimicrobial activity. The defining QC requirement is bacterial-endotoxin control: many of the downstream assays (NF-κB reporters, macrophage activation panels, neutrophil-priming readouts) are themselves activated by endotoxin contamination, so a clean LAL on the specific batch is a precondition rather than a nice-to-have. LL-37 and related cationic antimicrobial peptides additionally benefit from low-bind plasticware during dilution.

Frequently asked questions
LL-37 is the only cathelicidin-family antimicrobial peptide in humans. It is the 37-amino-acid C-terminal fragment released by proteolysis of the hCAP18 precursor, named for its two leading leucine residues. It folds into an amphipathic alpha-helix that disrupts microbial membranes and also acts as a signalling peptide in innate immunity, which is why it is studied in both antimicrobial and immunomodulation research.
At 37 residues and highly cationic, LL-37 is more prone to deletion-sequence impurities during synthesis and to aggregation in solution than short peptides. Vialdyne therefore pairs HPLC purity with ESI-MS identity on every lot and recommends LC-MS/MS sequence confirmation as a documented add-on, so labs using LL-37 as a reference standard can verify the full sequence rather than relying on retention time alone.
